May 2019 Newsletter from the DC Team

Date: 14th May 2019 Author: Heather Jones

Hello again from Heather and Ben

Looking across Montpelier Park at the many members – young and old –  participating in our District’s St George’s Day Parade a few weeks ago, we both felt a warm glow of pride in our wonderful District. What a brilliant bunch you all are! More on St George’s Day is included below. In this Newsletter we also get to celebrate the achievements of the young people in our Scout section as we look back on this year’s Totem Camp competition and Training Camp.

District Campsite

Dave F and Pete B have been doing amazing work at the campsite this last month.  The new digger has been working hard and the caving complex is well underway. They are also busy consulting with planning advisers and suppliers for the maintenance shed/workshop that will replace the existing containers and assuming all goes well with planning, we hope this will be completed around September/October.

Leader Promise & Investiture.

Following on from our annual renewal of promises at St George’s Day, I found myself (Heather) think a bit more about when we first make our Scout promise as adults. I  have recently come across a variety of opinions on the appropriate timing of investing a new Leader. If you are a full Member yourself, how soon after you took on your first adult role did you make your promise – did the timing feel about right? It’s certainly an important step – but not one to delay unduly.  Perhaps the point at which a provisional appointment becomes a full appointment might be a good moment to mark in this way? Or what about an earlier point – as soon as a person has got their DBS and been approved by the Appointments Advisory Committee and DC? A new Beaver (or indeed an older new youth member) usually only has to wait for a month or so before they get invested. Perhaps we should aim for something similar for new adult Members?

St George’s Day Parade. A very big thank you to the overall co-ordinator of this year’s event, Malcolm Turner. And many thanks also to everyone who helped to organise the various aspects of this year’s celebration of scouting in Ealing and Hanwell, and our renewal of promises. The story of St George was engagingly portrayed by a group of cubs from 25th Ealing and narrated by Sam and David, two explorers from Brigantia – featuring a fierce dragon defeated by a St George equipped with a deadly lightsaber. And we had Beavers from 6th Ealing who helped to lead the actions for the song He’s Got the Whole World in his Hands. The Lord Lieutenant got everyone waving their many St G flags – it looked fantastic! Before the parade, and after the celebration, it was great to have a number of extra refreshment stalls in the park – run by 7th Hanwell, 6th Ealing and 25th Ealing, plus the hospitality provided for guests by 1st Ealing North volunteers inside their HQ.  If you have any feedback on this year’s event please email the DC address and we will forward it to the organising team.

Totem Camp 2019

Congratulations to this year’s winners of Totem Camp, 1st Hanwell Panthers.  Congratulations must also go to Karl, Mark and Billy, their section leaders, as young people only win Totem with a lot of training and support from the adult team.

Huge thanks to Stuart Flaye and Ben Douglas for running the show and the 30-40 adults that support and assess the young people across the main and training camp during the weekend.  It’s a fantastic team effort and a real symbol of what Scouting is…young people achieving great things with the support of adults.

Jack Petchey Night

The Jack Petchey Foundation supports young people across London and Essex to achieve their potential.  The Scout Association has been working with them for a number of years and 6 young people were celebrated on Wednesday at the GLMW Celebration Evening.  Congratulations and well done to (from left to right, starting at the top) Alex, Hugo, Emily, Kalil, Christopher and Sam.

Thank you to Stuart Flaye, ADC (Scouts), for representing Ealing & Hanwell at the event.

Cubs Athletics

We held our first cub athletics competition for several years at Perivale Track on Sunday.  Nisha Patel, 25th Ealing, led the event with the support of many other leaders, the sun shone and all enjoyed themselves.  Well done to all the cubs that achieved their Athletics or Athletics Plus badge.

(If your section or Group’s fun activities haven’t been included this month, please do let us know about them for next time!)

Looking Ahead

#TellBear – UNDERWAY! Hopefully all Beaver Colonies and Cub Packs now have their package of postcards. As explained in the instructions within each pack, the Beavers and Cubs are being asked to tell Bear Grylls what they enjoy doing most, and to give him some suggestions for ways to make Scouting even better.  The aim is to send over 4,000 postcards to our Chief Scout from GLMW Cubs and Beavers! Beaver and Cub Section Leaders – we hope you will be completing this activity with your young people at some point over the next month, so the completed cards can be passed back to Heather in time for the County deadline in mid-June, no stamps required.

All Action American Adventure at PACCAR 24th-27th May

The All Action American Adventure camp is taking place soon.  As well as being a great event, this is also the opportunity to give a big loud send off to all our jamboree participants heading to the States in July.  Are you going? Please take some photos and share them with us for the next Newsletter.

Moonwalk

Huge well done to Nisha, Andrew and the other 25th Ealing leaders that completed the 26 mile Moonwalk on Saturday.  They have currently raised around £1400 towards fighting cancer but it’s not too late to donate..links below.  Thank you to you all.
