April 2019 Newsletter from the DC Team
April 2019 Newsletter from the DC Team
Hello again from Ben and Heather
April’s Newsletter falls during the Easter holidays so we are keeping it briefer than normal as we hope most of you are having a break from your regular Scouting duties. As experienced leaders, we are more than aware that often the holidays are just an opportunity to catch up on the tasks we didn’t quite find time to do during the term.
District Campsite – User Survey (sent to GSLs)
In order to improve the facilities for all users of the campsite, it would be useful to get some feedback from all Groups/Units on what use you make of the campsite and what activities you use and any other activities/ facilities you would like to see and use on site. Dave Folkerd -ADC Campsite – will be distributing a survey via the Group Scout Leaders so please pass your feedback on when asked. The campsite is your resource so please be honest and constructive.
The DC Team are still hoping to find a new third person, in view of Simon’s departure. Heather and Ben are ok as a duo (for now) ….but they’d much prefer to be part of a trio again!! As mentioned previously, please contact the DC Team on dc@ealingandhanwellscouts.org.
Nights Away Advisers – Seeking experienced Nights Away Permit holders, interested in becoming additional Nights Away Advisers for our District. Our current NAA, Steve Douglas is continuing in this role, but we would like to find a few more to work alongside Steve and learn the ropes, particularly with regard to technical competence assessments. There is a specific training module 25N – Assessing Learning, Nights Away version (no date for next course as yet available however). Beaver, Cub, Scout and Explorer Leaders are all welcome to apply.
Other Vacancies
We are still desperately seeking someone to step forward as our new District Treasurer. Sheila has been doing an amazing in holding the fort since retiring due to ill health but we need your help in filling this slot.
We are also still recruiting for an ADC Cubs. Although Grow Your Group has been paused there are still plenty of vacancies at a District level and in many groups.

District Beaver Sleepover at SAC – With thanks to Mandy for this report and photos
Nearly 100 Beavers from across Ealing & Hanwell enjoyed a magical sleepover in March.
We made magic wands, mixed magic potions, experienced illusions and learned tricks. Beavers also made their own Pizza, sang around a campfire and enjoyed the new adventure course at SAC.
Huge thanks to the Leaders who made it all possible.
(Mandy Combes DBSL)
Leaders gaining skills Well done to the leaders from our District who took up various training opportunities last month. Several got their First Aid refresher under their belt. Two took part in the Pioneering Course at Greenford’s SAC and we also had 5 leaders (from 6E, 16E, 25E and 5H) on the recent Hillwalking/Map Skills course run by Richard and other County hillwalking team members.
Camps abounding – Lots of Totem practice camps. Also some great sounding Cub camps, and mixed/Group camps too (16E Cubs Bushcraft….. 6E Camp at Willow Tree centre….)
(If your section or Group’s fun activities haven’t been included this month, please do let us know about them for next time!)
Looking Ahead
Hope to see you lots of you at our District St George’s Day Parade on Sunday 28th April. Also – for your selected flag bearers – 1 Beaver, 1 Cub & 1 Scout per group (plus the District colour party) – there will be a Colour rehearsal on Friday 26th April 6.30pm.
#TellBear A quick update on this fun GLMW project. The aim is to send over 4,000 postcards to Bear Grylls from Cub and Beaver Scouts across our whole County! Our District’s supply of postcards, and instructions for Leaders on how to take part, have just arrived with Heather, and we aim to distribute them to all our Beaver Colonies/Cub Packs as soon as we can after the Easter holidays..The idea is for the postcards to be completed any time between 28th April and early June, and then returned via a central District coordinator (probably Heather again) – so no stamps required!
County Inclusion Day – 11th May Still spaces left on this inclusion workshop. Whether you’re a Leader, GSL or helper come along! So if you’re free on 11th May sign up by emailing Alison. alison.oakley@glmwscouts.org.
District Cubs Athletics event – 12th May, 2pm (£3 per child) Details have already gone to all Cub Leaders by email, and there’s a flier on the E&H Scouters facebook group. Many thanks to Nisha and the other organisers for arranging this great opportunity for Cubs to earn their Athletics badge. Activities will include Javelin, Shotput, Long Jump, Sargant Jump and Sprint (and there’ll be a tuck shop). Good luck everyone!
NEW! First Response 18th May at Leighton Hall Places on the Leighton Hall first response course (May 18th) are filling fast. Remember an up to date first response is mandatory and the certificate ony lasts 3 years. Contact Jenny Foxwell asap if interested in booking a place. And if you can’t attend on 18th please contact Jenny about any of the following GLMW ones – there are courses around the county on May 4th/11th/13th and 14th evenings/18th and June 9th.
Moonwalk Some of the leaders of 25th Ealing are going to be taking part in a 15 mile walk in May to help raise money for Breast Cancer. Here’s Nisha to explain further: “Some of the Beavers leaders and Georgie and I, are going to be ditching our Scout uniform and swapping it for a colourful bra ( even our only male – Andrew) to take part in a 15 mile walk for Breast Cancer.” If you feel you are able to sponsor this effort, the 25th Ealing team would be most grateful…the links are below.

Westminster Scout Mile – 26th May This may be of interest to some members & their families ( those not doing the American Camp on that day of course!) – please pass on if you have keen runners in your Group; it would seem that independent registration by interested families (so they supervise their own youngsters) would be the better bet.
Camporee – 28th July-2nd August. Just a quick reminder that the deadline for applications is 2nd May. Six places for Cubs per Group are on offer. Final paperwork has already been circulated to Groups.
Yours in Scouting
Heather and Ben
