Scouts aims to build and develop young people’s confidence, sense of adventure and outdoor skills, as well as encouraging them to explore their beliefs and attitudes and be creative. It offers them the independence to put these skills into practice at camps and even on international trips.
Scouts are encouraged to work together and take the lead on all sorts of projects, from community based work to planning games and activities for their meetings.
The Scout Troop is the third section in the Scout Group, above Beavers and Cubs. The Scout Section is for young people aged between 10½ and 14 years.
At this age, we encourage girls and boys to take responsibility for themselves and each other, with older members leading a small team. They like being with friends and participating fully in the adventure of life.
Scouts usually wear a uniform at weekly meetings and sometimes on trips, depending on the activity. This typically includes a green shirt/blouse with badges sewn on, worn with a scarf known as a necker. Scouts can also wear official blue trousers or a skirt, though some choose to save these for special occasions like award ceremonies or public events and wear more casual bottoms during the week. Uniforms can be bought from the Scout Store online or from a local supplier, and if you need advice on where to buy or help with costs, a Scout volunteer can talk you through the options. Above all, the most important thing when you’re starting out is wearing something you feel comfortable and confident in, and knowing where to sew on your badges.
