Financial Support

One of the Scouting fundamentals within the local area is that no young person should miss out on an activity due to their financial circumstances; the same is true of the adult volunteers that directly run the sections and also support them.  The District has therefore created the Financial Support Fund – a fund to be used to ensure that everyone that wants to take part in Scouting can do so, regardless of their income.

The fund can be accessed for any event, even a trip to the local bowling alley or a weekend at the Dockland Scout Project.  Applications can also be made to cover items like uniform or any specialist equipment that may be needed to participate in everyday Scouting activities, e.g walking boots.

The District has appointed an independent person, Chris Cosstick, to manage applications to the fund and he will review them and where appropriate, seek guidance from Howard Branley, the District Commissioner.  ALL applications are made in confidence although they will need to be approved by either your immediate line manager (GSL, DESC, ADC) if an adult or your section leader if a young person.

There is currently a limit of £250 that a single person can apply for although it is expected that some contribution is made from the applicant towards the cost of the activity, especially for ‘big’ events; this is primarily to ensure that a commitment has been made to take part. The limit was introduced after discussion and approval by the District Executive. This is to try to ensure that no single section or group exhaust the fund, which is not limitless.

To apply please do the following:

  • Download the FinancialSupportApplicationForm2016 and complete all you can.
  • Forward to your section leader or line manager for their approval.
  • Email the form to the District Commissioner (Howard Branley) at
Chris Cosstick will review the application and liaise directly with the DC over any questions.

Good Luck and Happy Scouting!
