District Executive Committee Report
This year has most certainly been a special as it covers the last half of the centenary year. There has been a great deal of activity around the District that hopefully will give all from the youngest Beaver to the oldest of the senior members something to remember.
The Jamboree was a great success and we hope that we can build on that. Those who attended have memories of a splendidly organised event. We had representatives on the various support teams as well as Scouts as main participants. This gave them the opportunity to meet Scouts from around the world, develop friendships with them, exchange stories and take part in many activities and also home hosting. Our census figures in January showed a welcome rise in the number of young people in the District. This was for the second year running and we must maintain that increase in the coming year and also encourage more adults to take a active part in the running of the various sections. We do have too many gaps; the District team needs strengthening, we cannot just denude the Groups to fill the holes. It is also great to report the reopening of the 16th Ealing Troop so that we now have increased capacity in the northern part of the District. Now we have 8 Troops. Great.
Much has been said in the national Press of various years of volunteering, but few come the way of scouting. We must find out why and react to the way society is made up these days. Likewise obtaining funding for Scouting from the lottery and elsewhere has become harder for us.
The section reports give an in depth overview of the what we have achieved during the year. Both leaders and the young members can be justly proud of their efforts. One person who can be proud is Dominic Figon SL of the 1st Ealing North who became the first Queens Scout for many years . Well done. These things do not just happen, so thanks to all the leaders for their time and effort throughout the year. To the helpers who came to assist on colony, pack or troop nights and especially on outside activities. Without you all Scouting would be a dull affair. A special thanks to Alan Rayner who hands over the role to JohnFoxwell at this time. A hard act to follow. Alan had a hard job to do as the District Team has been depleted and necessitated a lot more time than he anticipated in keeping the ship on an even keel.
Also handing over was Brian Shepherd who has been the District Appointments secretary for many, many years. His service to the District has been outstanding and we offer him our grateful thanks for all his hard work first in a uniform capacity and then as a lay person.
Those who have been to the camp site have seen it blossom over the last two years, thanks to the hard work of Paul Phillips, Pete Balls the warden and their team. So many hours have been spent on improving all aspects of the site. Much work has been done, clearing areas, planting tress, planning fro more work. Just recently the drive had new coat of tarmac and stones, much sweat and hard work in filling potholes, evening out many piles of the the base material. Thanks also to Gordon Nunn who has been the team manager for the last two years and has due to other task has had to relinquish the post. Jenny Salmon has also worked hard during a difficult year in advertising the site, developing new users and keeping tabs on the bookings and camp fees etc. Thanks Jenny. It was great to be able to welcome back Carol Johnson and her family, for her to open the Keego activity course set up as a memorial to her late husband Michael, who had left a legacy to the District. How much this has been enjoyed by so many in the last year.
We are grateful for the support from the members of the County and elsewhere. To the Mayors and Council of the Borough of Ealing, to Robert Leader the deputy Lieutenant, have also been supportive.
Finally thanks to our President, John Matthews, members of the executive and to all, far too many to name here, who have so willingly given their time to Scouting.
Thanks
A Phillips
Secretary
