CAMPOREE XXIII

AUGUST 2008 at the District Camp Site, Stoke Poges S P A C E An almost sunny week in August and it was the 23rd Annual Camporee - with the theme of "space". There were 4 Sub camps (each holding 15 Cub Scouts): Star Wars, Doctor Who, Futurama and Star Trek The sub camps and the outdoor catering area were suitably theme decorated, and solar and rope lights lit up the camp site at night! Badgework was attempted during the mornings, with the introduction of the Astronomer Badge beautifully led by David Bussell, and it provided an insight to the planetary and solar systems. Cate and Jay brought new life to the Personal Safety Badge, Mark Power done an excellent job with the DIY; Sharon was very entertaining in herself overseeing the Entertainers badge - i think there was as much fun in the sessions and rehearsals as there was with the performances! - all in all all the Cub Scouts were entertained, taught some new things, worked together for various games, activities, campfires and behaved very well throughout the camp. We had a craft afternoon, a little walk in the country, an Olympics style sports afternoon, swimming at the Chiltern pool in Amersham- and even a couple of Rest Hours!! Evenings were taken up with wide games, campfires and stories! The day outing was to the Greenwich Observatory and Maritime Museum - a good time was had by most- only marred by one of the coaches taken well over 2 hours to arrive there! We were blessed with the good weather towards the end of camp (although to be honest the rain showers that came did not really put us off our stride) and al the tents were successfully put away nice and dry – THANKS TEAM! The young leader team , comprising of explorer scouts, scouts, guides and other youthful members under 18, were superb in their leadership, their manner and their enthusiasm led by the truly wonderful Edmund– so to all the young guys and girls- THANK YOU for making the camp a great success. Also to the ‘older ones’ who presented their badge work with great dedication and professionalism - a fine team round; especially to Cate, Sharon, Kirsty and Jay who experienced their first Camporee and blended in beautifully. Again the catering service really was ‘out of this world’ – Jim, Emily and David were truly magnificent. ‘Doctor’ David (with assistance from ‘Sister’ Jane) proved as always to be a star with thankfully not too much first aiding duties to do. It was also lovely to welcome ‘Mrs David’ Jackie, and Jacob their grandson too. Special thanks to Jenny- for all the hard work beforehand with the administration, sorting out tent groups and badge base groups, and for being as great as she always is Sorry if I have missed anybody out (not intentional)- but be assured that each and every one of you proved to be ‘simply the best’ and provide a first class camping experience for some fine young cub scouts.
So that is it for another year - who knows what will happen next year- when will it be? who will be involved? It is a
fabulous team who work very well together so whoever takes over the helm will have a vast experience and knowledge to work with, so good luck!! If you would like to be part of the organising team then contact the DC and I promise you a truly fabulous experience.! so finally

T H A N K S
for everything -
I really was ‘over the moon’ with its
success!
