St George’s Day 2008
We were most fortunate as the rain clouds in the morning moved away leaving an overcast but dry afternoon. This years parade was different from the previous years when traditionally the service was held in one of the local churches.
Having formed up in Station Approach Hanwell, the parade was led by the District Officers and a colour party from the 1st Hanwell, they having been winners of the previous years Totam Camp. Sadly the joint boys brigade band had been disbanded during the last year so it became a silent parade, well it may have been, but I was a distance away.
The parade then moved via Greenford Avenue and Church Road to Churchfields, where they formed up in the area adjacent to the Scout War memorial. The service was then led by Fr Peter Andrews, vicar of St Thomas’ and a short address was given by Fr Matthew Grayshon vicar of St Marys’. Prayers were read by members of the 1st, 5th, and 7th Hanwell Groups.
After the renewal of Promises led by District Officers and the final song, the parade was reviewed by the Mayor and Rep Deputy Lieutenant. The collection of £400 was reserved for replacing the trees around the memorial. They may soon have to be removed due to disease. Thanks to Dominic Figon who provided the music and to all who helped to set up and clear up on the day.
